What Dolby does

Since 2005, Dolby Australia has been an R&D hub for Dolby Laboratories, with over 160 engineers, scientists and researchers, working on core and cutting-edge technologies, including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Voice, Dolby On, and Dolby.io. Technology developed by the Dolby Australia team is deployed in devices across the globe from mobile phones and laptops to soundbars and TVs. The team builds Dolby’s API platform hosted at Dolby.io, enables musicians to master recordings right from their phone with Dolby On, and works on innovative orchestrated sound for the homes of tomorrow.

Mission:  Making experiences come alive through technology is what we do. It's been our mission since day one

Size and presence: Dolby globally employs more than 2500 employees with over 160 employees in Australia

Best known for: Dolby’s remarkable audiovisual technologies heighten and deepen your experiences, helping you feel more. It’s the heavy downpour in a moody scene. The stunningly vivid sunset in the show’s season finale. The song you feel deep in your chest. The footsteps lurking behind you on the video game battlefield. The voice of a colleague on a call who lives across the globe but sounds like they’re right next to you.

The good bits: Great combination of entertainment and technology-based company with good profit sharing and work-life balance. You get to work on building amazing experiences for the entertainment and communications ecosystems.

The not-so-good bits: The intern hiring process can take a while.

The Dolby Australia story

Dolby Australia was formed in 2005 after Dolby Laboratories acquired Australian start-up Lake Technologies. Lake was formed in the early 1990s after co-founders Brian Conolly and David McGrath saw an opportunity to apply hardware developed for radio astronomy to the domain of audio processing.

In the mid '90s Lake turned its attention to delivering the experience of listening to a surround sound speaker system over headphones. A partnership was formed with Dolby Laboratories and the technology was commercialized under the brand Dolby Headphone. Since 2005 Australia has continued to be a key strategic R&D hub for Dolby.

What we are working on in Sydney

Entertainment

The goal of the Entertainment Group is to “create experiences that transcend expectations”. In Sydney, this means creating new audio processing technologies that are integrated into consumer electronics products. If you have a soundbar, TV or PC that supports Dolby Atmos, or a laptop that supports Dolby Voice, then you are one of the hundreds of millions of people across the globe running code developed by our team. To do this work we rely on skilled algorithm and software developers who love solving problems together in a team. In addition to building new core technologies, we also care about making it easy for our customers to integrate our technology into their devices. To this end, we also have a team of Android experts who focus on integrating Dolby technology into the Android OS and a team of electronics and mechanical engineers who work on creating new physical hardware to allow us to demonstrate our technology to new prospective customers.

Dolby.io

In the past, Dolby's media technology was only accessible to studios and professional content creators, or vendors creating high-volume consumer electronic products, with Dolby.io this has all changed. Through web-hosted APIs, Dolby.io provides developers everywhere the ability to integrate our technology into their apps and services. The Dolby.io platform currently supports the enhancement of media in interactive meetings, analytics and enhancement of media in post-production including music mastering. The team in Sydney contributes to all facets of Dolby.io, from the core web services platform through to the interactive and post-production APIs. The team also develops our award-winning app Dolby On, which enables users to record and master content right from their phones. Our team is made of specialists across the disciplines of web technology, mobile development, quality assurance, and automation, and AI and media processing.

Technology Incubation

Dolby’s Technology Incubation group studies the technology landscape for emerging themes. We create research programs that explore the impact of these technology themes on Dolby’s existing businesses, as well as researching cutting-edge opportunities adjacent to our current businesses. Dolby’s Sydney location houses the largest research team within the Technology Incubation group. Our Sydney research team are experts in audio deep learning and AI as well as classical digital signal processing algorithms and their performance evaluation.

Current major research programs running at Technology Incubation Sydney include:

  • Orchestrated Play and Listen (OPaL): technology that allows audio devices to cooperate in the home in order to create great-sounding Dolby Atmos movie and music content, while making it easier for your virtual assistant to hear you. This involves distributed audio signal processing and AI.
  • Human Multimodal Analytics: technology to understand the human context behind an audio/video scene and allow us to adapt our playback and communication experiences accordingly. This involves audio AI technologies such as speech recognition, talker identification, wakeword detection, speech representation learning and acoustic scene analysis.
  • Capture: technology to robustly capture a spatial audio scene for communications, and User Generated Content (UGC). This involves data-driven beamforming and other spatial analysis techniques.
  • AI and R&D Tools: technology for deploying neural networks that process audio in real time, as well as tools and processes that ease the flow of new technology from our research groups into our product engineering groups.

Our Employee Networks (ENs) create ways for employees to share in and learn more about our diversity by building community, supporting our business, and enabling enhanced development opportunities. Together, these ENs help our entire organization engage in topics of diversity, inclusion, and belonging most relevant to members, allies, offices, and local communities.

Dolby’s approach to Flex Work gives each of our employees the options and tools to find a schedule that lets them get their best work done. We encourage employees to find the balance that’s right for them between in-person and remote, between focus and collaboration, and between work and life.

Your Well-being is our Well-being, and we take our holistic approach across the Physical, Emotional/Mental, Financial, and Community-related sectors very seriously.  As well as having a wide range of active employee networks in place, our team of Wellbeing Warriors is tasked with finding the right space in which employees can enjoy a variety of well-being benefits, which include physical activities like yoga, Bollywood dancing, and personal training, cook-along with our nutritionist, regular mental health and financial workshops, and campaigns which synch up with National health-related focus.  Add to this a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme as well as a top-notch Company Donation Matching system, and we feel our coverage in the Well-being space is pretty good – and think you will too.

Social Contributions

Through our Dolby Cares program, employees from our offices in 20+ countries volunteer as individuals, as part of a work team, or through our diversity and inclusion employee networks. From tutoring youth and mentoring adults reentering the workforce to delivering meals to seniors or providing legal services through our legal pro-bono program, our employees are making our communities stronger.

As a leader in technological innovation and consumer experience, we recognize our responsibility extends well beyond our office walls. We take our obligations to the communities in which we live and work seriously and are continually pressing for new ways to inspire and support the next generation of diverse creators, builders, and innovators.

Our most significant efforts focus on establishing more opportunities for the talent of the future—from investing in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) education to early recruitment and hiring. We have long-standing partnerships with several community organizations in which we provide financial grants, technological support, and volunteer time to increase equity in education and opportunity.

Environmental sustainability remains a top priority for Dolby, and we are strengthening our initiatives to combat climate change and its devastating impacts on people, communities, and our Earth. To manage and mitigate our environmental footprint, we prioritize reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and waste from our operations and offsetting what we cannot reduce. We have implemented recycling and composting programs to capture waste materials and reduce landfill waste. We responsibly manage hazardous, universal, and electronic waste at our offices by reusing, recycling, and properly disposing of these materials.
