The Story of Block Australia

To fulfil their dream of creating an easy-to-use technology that combines merchant services and mobile payments, entrepreneurs Jim McKelvey and Jack Dorsey created Square, Inc. in 2009.

Less than a decade later, millions of small businesses use Square to accept credit card payments, obtain financing, and track sales and inventory. Square has offices in the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the UK, Spain, and Japan.

In December 2021, Square Inc. changed its name to Block Inc. to account for its exponential growth. Block's product line includes Square (for sellers to process payments via smartphone), Cash App (allows users to store, send, and receive money for free through a mobile application), TIDAL (a subscription-based streaming service), Spiral (open-source Bitcoin projects), TBD (access to Bitcoin and other blockchain technologies).

On 31 January 2022, Block announced that it had completed its acquisition of Afterpay Ltd., an Australian financial technology company providing a "buy now, pay later" platform. This enables Block to offer "buy now, pay later" services to sellers who use its Square payments ecosystem.

Culture & vibe

Block is a company that consists of many teams with the same purpose of economic empowerment. Their foundational teams (such as Finance, Counsel, People, Hardware, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, Information Security, and more) provide guidance and support at the corporate level while working collaboratively with other teams across the company.

They also work around the globe and across business groups, spanning disciplines and time zones to develop safeguard systems, inclusive People policies, forecast finances, nurture new initiatives, give legal counsel, and more.

On the other hand, Cash App, Square, TBD, TIDAL, and Spiral teams develop products and services for their audiences (buyers, sellers, developers, artists, listeners, and Bitcoiners). It is a collaborative work environment with flexible work arrangements.

In addition, the company is also working to build a thriving, inclusive, and healthy workplace. In 2020, its employees were 41% women and 21% underrepresented minorities, which grew in relative percentage year over year.
