Pros & Cons

  • Development and career opportunities Healthy and motivating work culture.
  • The forefront of the transition to net zero. Application of engineering knowledge.
  • They fully embrace diversity and are working towards continually improving the broader workplace culture. There are neurodivergent individuals within the business who receive appropriate accommodations and can be their best selves at the workplace because of this. Hybrid working is also a significant positive.
  • This company shows a commitment to the development of its students. This can be seen through the 4 rotations that make up the graduate program, where we are encouraged to experience all the corners of the business (e.g., my previous rotation before Civil Design was Construction), and in every team I have been finding only the most helpful people around me. Also, there is a huge portion of the company who have been here for 10-15+ years, which says a lot about the company and adds to the company culture as well.
  • Respect, training, compensation, work-life balance.
  • In my opinion, TransGrid doesn't have the worst thing: workloads may get intense, and positions wanted during the grad program may be taken by other grads.
  • I still need time to take sufficient responsibility during the program.
  • Undergoing lots of change can cause uncertainty and a lack of clarity.
  • I have encountered some individuals with difficult personalities; however, these individuals have all since left the company.
  • The worst thing would probably be that it is bound to NSW, but that's not a fault of the company as much as it is the nature of it. One other thing might be that due to the long working lifetimes of some staff at the same company, at times you find someone who believes themselves to be a master of their field and is then unwilling to learn, although the world and the industry are changing so rapidly. This happens so seldom, though I am nitpicking here.

Career Prospects
From what I can gather, Transgrid appears to be really transparent on the rewards and recognition aspect, which I highly appreciate. People who are outstanding in their field are quick to be recognised and celebrated, as are those who raise issues, problems, or incidents, rather than being frowned upon. As for promotions, after the graduate program it is up to you to find a permanent position and interview for this role, however there have been numerous opportunities popping up and being advertised even during my time. I have received 3 offers so far while not even looking for a role, so I would say there are plenty of opportunities for promotion and development at the current stage.

Culture
There is an abundance of friendly individuals who are more than happy to take time out to enrich your individual experience within the workplace and share their knowledge and expertise. We are encouraged as much as possible to see everyone as a level playing field, which is beneficial to all. As a graduate, I find it easy to speak to those in higher positions than myself, as the company recognises we are on a level playing field. Outside of hours, fellow graduates frequently spend time together and have a sense of community amongst our peers.

Diversity
This is an incredibly positive space. There are committees for diversity, gender equity, and supporting the lgbtqia+ community, with working groups carrying out work throughout the year. Parental leave covers the same amount of time for men and women.

In this team, I will say that I am quite new (less than 1 month), and this may be the reason that my workload so far feels a little light. My responsibilities include doing calculations to ensure the feasibility of designs as well as contributing to safety and design considerations where required. In previous roles, I found the busyness of the teams meant I had a lot of autonomy and often worked on my own, but mostly out of choice—I always had support whenever I needed it.

I am incredibly satisfied with my managers. They have all treated me with respect and have guided me well throughout my time here. They make wonderful mentors with insightful performance feedback, and the company as a whole is shifting in favour of recognising individuals achievements.

There is no set dress code; however, most people prefer to wear business casual. There are currently multiple office revamps across the state, with the current one being the Sydney CBD office space. The relocated space in the same building is newly renovated and to a high standard.

Recruitment
Submitted application. This was followed by online aptitude tests, which were quite fun. Last were the assessment centre and panel interviews, which were nice and short. The whole process was easy and seamless in comparison to other graduate programs.

For my experience level, my pay is very good. My opportunities for moving up are also very good.

Training
As the nature of our work is very high-risk, there is thorough and substantial training that is required and administered at Transgrid. This includes internal PSSR training (Power Systems Safety Rules), which is delivered both online and in person in a substation, as well as Australia-recognised technical qualifications and certificates that are required. During my time as a graduate, I've also been able to undertake additional training, and at one stage, I was even able to attend a 3-day seminar that was aimed at non-technical people working in the power industry, which was perfect for a new starter like me to learn the less-detailed but highly-relevant aspects of the overarching power business. I have so far received: LVR + CPR, First Aid, PSSR (internal), Asbestos, and Silica Awareness.
