Career Prospects at Nova Systems

6.5
6.5 rating for Career Prospects, based on 32 reviews
Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I feel that Nova values personal development and encourages people to seek career progression within the company.

There is no visibility of career progression or promotion opportunities. non-management staff are generally just called Systems Engineer or Senior Systems Engineer. There is no pay scale or broad banding information available and I don't know what I need to be promoted to a higher position by recognition.

We aren't really given a set way on how we can get promoted. I have asked around and most people say "Just know the right people". There is a general feeling that promotions aren't given based on merit or ability, but rather on connections and company longevity.

There isn't much discussion about those things that I've experienced at my level.

We had a discussion with Early Careers about what comes next after the Grad program and how we transition into the dedicated work force. Other than that, the promotion ladder remains kind of a blur. Personal Development although separate does lightly feed into career progression opportunities so I'd say that it's a real positive and encouraging when the whole company wants you to pursue what you want to learn.

Currently a Graduate, so these opportunities won't arrive till after completion of the Early Careers program. Promotion is achieved through both experience and external qualifications.

As a grad, I will move up to a junior engineer in 2 years, which I look forward to. To move up the rank we need to show competency in our projects and have a discussion to our line manager.

I am not aware of many opportunities as I have only been in the graduate program during my time here. But from what I've seen, promotion opportunities are available and encouraged as long as you're willing to put your hand up and say yes to things that arise.

It is hard to see what opportunities or new roles are available to us, and difficult to gain insight about the companys projects and roles involved. But, it is clear that networking and asking works really well.
Graduate, Brisbane
No clear career direction currently, aside from going to a junior engineer after the grad program.
Graduate, Canberra
Not sure how post grad program promotion opportunities occur.

I do not know the path for my career after the graduate program. Unless a commonwealth project agrees to hire me for billed work, I do not see any career prospects within the company.

As an engineering graduate Nova gives both horizontal and vertical movement. I can choose to pursue a technical or management style career, and this can occur in various different disciplines, from maritime to land to air, or in different fields, from Defence to Government to Civil. Nova is supportive in allowing you to move around and work with different opportunities. Additionally, all full employees are provided with a Professional Development budget and time off to work towards our goals. Our goals are also linked to our performance reviews, and as such have value placed on them by the company.

I don't even know what that looks like.

At this stage, I am unaware of the promotion opportunities in my company. I have opportunities to progress my career in the direction I see beneficial to myself.

Seeing the position my seniors are in, some of whom started as grads, it seems to me that there are many opportunities to move up through the company, both in engineering roles and in managerial roles. As the company is growing, I have heard that these opportunities are more common than in other companies.

There are no promotion opportunities openly available for graduate engineers, I believe our progression over the two years are prescribed. Where I think these two years are a good chance to have a learning opportunity in selling your skill set to your employer/current line manager and negotiating additional responsibilities and/or promotions. As once we leave the graduate program it wont purely be a predefined progression but an element of selling your skill set as well

There is no proper way to tell how to be promoted and move up ranks. If you want to move up you need to network in the company and identify opportunities that way. The issue might be on the definition promotion in consulting and engineering. This might just mean more money. If it is more money then yes you can ask for more. However role wise this might be one transferring from level 2 to 3, this area is not very clear.
Graduate, Canberra
As a graduate engineer, promotions are predetermined and so far it seems fair.

Must apply for positions on company board page. Seems difficult to move between areas as it is annoying for managers. Grad program progression is very straightforward: 2 year program (a little too long), 2 x rotations, pay rise during 2nd year, come off the grad program as a consultant (most likely stuck with where you were in last rotation), pay rise when come off grad program.
