Pros & Cons

  • There's a good work culture, a strong focus on learning, and the opportunity to do a range of meaningful work.
  • How friendly and helpful everyone is, especially when you are new and trying to get used to the company. The work culture is also quite flexible, and I can fit my schedule around what works for me when it's possible.
  • The presence of a supportive and collaborative work environment. Our colleagues are not only friendly but also deeply invested in each other's success.
  • The variety of projects and jobs available so the work never feels repetitive. Great co-workers make the office an enjoyable place to come into.
  • Great work culture, co-workers are good to collaborate with on projects whilst also being good to talk to outside of work. The ability to work from home is also great and super helpful.
  • Slow phase of work and uneven distribution of workload through the period which can't be complained about much as this comes with Defence.
  • The traffic when going to and from work. Also not a lot of parking.
  • The time-consuming nature of procedures that are in place due to working in defence can make progress feel slow.
  • Probably how the graduate program is currently being remodelled (I understand this is due to people leaving) and that for right now any direction provided is very open-ended and it makes it hard to figure out goals. But in saying that direct management is still working to keep us on track, set goals relating specifically to our working department and involve us so that's good.
  • In big companies working with lots of people, can be hard to gather the required information.

Promotion and moving to new roles are guided by a company capability framework, which compares your current skills and capabilities against what would be required for a new role. Your development in your current role is targeted towards this, meaning you have an opportunity to gain experience to help you shift to a new role. Generally, there is an attempt to promote from within rather than hire externally due to the complex nature of the work.

The company allows employees to have 8 hours of volunteer time available for employees to use to promote STEM or other areas of the business.

Culture
One thing I have noticed is that everybody is always willing to answer questions and give me a hand when needed, which has been very helpful as a new grad. There is a strong team atmosphere, and we regularly go out or play basketball during our lunch break, etc. There is also quite a bit of flexibility in how you do your work, with lots of people working compressed 9-day fortnights, working from home for part of the week, or shifting start/finish times earlier or later to fit around their personal circumstances.

Diversity

Diversity
I think the working environment is very inclusive and definitely diverse. I think the number of women in the company is growing, and I am hoping to see more of this growth as time passes. In terms of retention, I have not been in the company long enough to comment on it, but I think that the company is starting to change things to make the retention rate better. As a young professional with no children, it seems like the childcare and maternity leave are quite flexible as the company has both maternity and paternity leave available as an option to employees, and as the workday is flexible, childcare seems possible.

Work as a graduate project manager, working on a range of small projects. One of my main responsibilities at the moment is to help build a schedule for our sustainment activities for the Collins class submarines.

Yes, I am very satisfied with my manager. I think that he provides good advice and has great knowledge in the PM field. He also makes a good mentor, as he provided a lot of tools that have been guiding me as I start my career.

Office Work Environment
The office is very nice, cleaned daily and well looked after. The dress code is as expected from a corporate company. Pants, nice shoes, collard shirt Monday to Thursday and a nice option is to wear casual attire on Fridays.

Recruitment
While the skills and academic side are important, I would say that Babcock looks for people who work well with others and would be a good culture fit, so I would keep that in mind and not focus solely on the technical aspects of the role.

About the same as the other offers, I received in the engineering/project management field.

Training
I think I have learnt a lot about the PMO space. I have learnt a lot in regard to using programmes such as Microsoft Project, and I have been learning a lot about the business, especially since this is my first rotation in the Graduate Programme. There have also been other training courses that I have attended, irrelevant to my current rotation, but it had been good information to know as it broadens my knowledge.

Work Hours
Very flexible, so long as you complete your contracted hours (for most people this is 38 hours per week) there is a great degree of flexibility in when you do them. Some people start or finish earlier or later, working from home for a few days per week is an option, and many people choose to do a compressed fortnight, working increased hours for 9 days and taking every second Friday off.
