Pros & Cons

  • Genuine contribution to the future of the country and the chance to work on real systems that affect lives on a daily basis. Work Life Balance Strong workplace culture: colleagues that are happy to help and behind you all the way. Chance to work on some really interesting problems and be part of the energy transition for the future. Chance to work with some fantastic people.
  • The work is extremely rewarding. This enables me to stay strongly self-motivated and push to achieve goals.
  • Pride of purpose in working for an employer that is shaping the future of Australia and all the great challenges that come with it.
  • AEMO is uniquely placed as the operator of the National Electricity Market to be responsible for a swathe of different roles and responsibilities across the entire country and across disciplines, the industry is incredibly fascinating and currently undergoing rapid change, it's a really interesting place to work and now, in particular, is the most interesting time!
  • Get to learn a lot about the energy industry in Australia. Get to rotate through multiple teams on the graduate program.
  • The business is wide ranging and has hundreds of responsibilities - this can be daunting and graduates can get lost without the proper guidance.
  • Negative press and misrepresentations in the media.
  • AEMO is an NGO that makes decisions affecting a really wide variety of stakeholders, not just generators, retailers and network operators but also individual consumers and manufacturers. This means AEMO has to work very hard to keep lots of people happy and can often cop a lot of flak in the media. This doesn't preclude AEMO from making changes in the industry and getting things done though.

I can see that there is an opportunity to move up the ranks later, however, I'm still rotating between teams.

Corporate Social Responsibility
I personally haven't participated in these initiatives as much as I should have. In the past, AEMO has worked with various charities. AEMO has had events and initiatives to mark - Reconciliation week - Pride month, trans awareness week - Harmony week on top of that AEMO is instrumental in planning for/allowing the shift to an inverter-based renewable electricity grid and operating this grid.

Culture

Culture
After hours culture can depend on the team and the office location. It is not the most hierarchical business and there is a strong level of cooperation amongst the workforce. Socializing amongst colleagues happens relatively frequently, and is dependent on the office location.
8.6
Diversity
8.6
Diversity
AEMO is a very inclusive workforce, primarily driven by the individuals who work here being open-minded and respectful. Recruitment and retention are done according to skills and experience, there appear to be no biases in that respect.

Satisfaction
On the grad program, I've covered a huge variety of different interesting work and yet have only scratched the surface of all of what AEMO does. I've been able to contribute content to three separate high profile public reports, I've been involved in stakeholder engagement, in the weeds in the engineering, knee-deep in data exploration, putting together my own novel analysis of emerging issues, and so much more. I've learned everything I needed on the job, I have no background in the energy industry and I've picked it up along the way and fallen in love with it!

Salary
The once-a-year company-performance based bonus is generous and a great perk of AEMO. Salary is high for a graduate-level employee.

Training
7.9
Training
The grad program usually has extensive soft skills training, and your team(s) will provide you with whatever training you want or need for your job. This might be a multi-day course with a facilitator learning how to use particular software, some online tutorials learning a programming language, the opportunity to work on a project that teaches you new skills, and more. AEMO is very interested in ensuring that all staff have the opportunity to learn.

Work Hours
My company is extremely flexible with hours. I currently work for a remote team based in multiple cities and so I only attend the office a couple of days a week. My manager is very flexible in allowing me and other team members to change our hours to attend appointments when necessary.

As an electricity grid operator, we take on many technical challenges that allow us to move to a renewable electricity grid, which makes up more than 30% of Australia's emissions and with further electrification of transport and other industries could indirectly reduce our emissions more. As for the environmental footprint, we largely operate a paperless office and there have been various initiatives made to brainstorm ways in which we can reduce our environmental footprint.
